Daily Foot Care a Must for New Jersey Diabetics

As a diabetic, taking proper care of your feet is just as important as taking your diabetes medication. You must do your part to prevent serious foot issues. For most of your life, you likely didn't give your feet much thought. Now, the care of your feet is vitally important to keeping you strong and healthy. As podiatrists with vast experience treating patients with diabetes in Wayne, NJ, we want to equip you to do all you can to stop diabetic foot problems before they start.

The Health of Your Feet Is in Your Hands

Checkups with both your primary physician and podiatrist are important. However, your physician cannot be with you all the time. Day in and day out it is up to you to maintain the health of your feet. Our Wayne, NJ diabetic foot specialists created the following checklist to help you better understand and manage the care of your feet.
  • Give your feet a once over- With diabetic feet, you may have a serious foot problem and not feel any pain or discomfort. Therefore it is crucial that each day you look over your feet, checking for scratches, cuts, cracks, blisters or sores. Use a shatter-resistant mirror to check the bottom of your feet. See your doctor as soon as possible if you find any injuries or sores.
  • Wash your feet thoroughly- When washing your feet do not soak them. Instead, using warm water, gently use a mild soap to clean all portions of the foot. When drying the feet ensure that you dry the entire foot, especially between your toes. Apply lotion to the tops and bottoms of the feet but not between the toes. Excess moisture in this area can cause in infection.
  • Carefully trim nails when needed- The best time to cut your nails is after washing them. Taking care not to cut your toes, trim the nail following the natural curve of the toenail. Do not cut into the corners. Use an emery board to file the edges smooth. If you are unable to cut them yourself, please contact a Wayne, NJ diabetic foot specialist at 973.595.8900.
