What are the most common causes of heel pain?

A:

Heel pain comes in many different forms. Some have been suffering with pain in their heels for years while others find themselves suddenly in pain with no apparent injury or cause. A few of the more common causes of heel pain (link to heel pain PA) that our Wayne, NJ podiatrists have seen include:

  • Heel Spurs- This condition is usually associated with plantar fasciitis.
  • Plantar Fasciitis- The most common cause of heel pain, plantar fasciitis is caused by tight tissue in the arch of the foot. The ligaments that make up the arch then become irritated and inflamed, causing pain where they connect to the heel.
  • Tarsal Tunnel- This syndrome occurs when a nerve in the back of the foot becomes pinched. The pinched nerve can cause extreme pain in the heel.
  • Stress Fracture- A stress fracture is most common in people who are very physically active. Long distance runners many experience pain in the heel caused by a stress fracture.
  • Posterior Heel Pain- Caused by an injury or irritation in the back of the heel or Achilles tendon, the pain will be felt at the back of the heel.

When to See a Wayne, NJ Heel Pain Expert

If you are suffering from any form of heel pain, do not wait to see an experienced podiatrist. Heel pain, from any condition or injury, is better treated soon after it starts. In many cases waiting to get treatment can make the injury worse, leading to a longer recovery time and more invasive and restrictive treatments.

Do not let your heel pain slow you down. Call 973.595.8900 to make an appointment with one of our Wayne, NJ foot specialists today.
