Should every sprained ankle be treated?

A:

It is crucial that you or your child be seen for a sprained ankle. Not only might the damage be worse than you know, but not treating a sprained ankle properly can lead to instability and further injury.

Treatment of a Sprained Ankle

When evaluating a sprained ankle (link to ankle sprain PA), your Wayne, NJ podiatrist may begin by taking an x-ray or MRI of the injured ankle. This will allow her to differentiate a sprain from a fracture. If the bones are not broken, the next step will be determining the extent of the injury.

A sprain occurs when the ankle turns or twists unnaturally. The ligaments that hold the ankle bones together tear, either partially or completely. This tearing of the ligaments causes severe pain and swelling in the ankle. Immediately after the injury and until you can see a New Jersey podiatrist, it is recommended that you follow the RICE treatment plan:

  • Rest- Keep all weight off the injured foot.
  • Ice- Apply an ice pack wrapped in a thin towel immediately after the injury. Continue to ice the ankle for 30 minutes at a time.
  • Compression- A wrap bandage can be used to provide stability in the joint and reduce pain and swelling. Ensure the wrap is not applied too tightly.
  • Elevation- Immediately after the accident, lie down and elevate the ankle above heart level. Continue to do so periodically until you are treated.

The Importance of Treating Every Ankle Sprain

If you do not seek treatment of your sprained ankle, it may heal improperly. The ligaments may not spring back as they should, leaving them weak and prone to tear again. Because of this, many patients come into our Wayne, NJ podiatrists’ office only after their third or fourth sprained ankle. At this point, we often have to recommend more restrictive treatments such as casts, splints or even surgery.
