A: The surgical approach from one foot to another is different. Hammertoes can be fixed surgically. The surgery requires removing a piece of bone and may require fixation of the joint (s). Postoperative pain is controlled with pain medication. After surgery you will be able to walk using a special shoe. The amount you walk is determined by how much swelling and pain you have. The bone takes about one month to heal.
